Murphy Full Of Praise For Calyx Colt After Goodwood Win

Principality (2c Calyx – Dutch Rose, by Dutch Art) shaped like a smart colt when justifying short-priced favouritism at Goodwood on Sunday.

Runner-up at Newmarket on debut, Richard Hannon’s charge remained over six furlongs on his second start and was settled towards the back of the field by Oisin Murphy. The bay made smooth headway approaching the two furlong marker and was ridden a furlong later, improving to lead soon after. He kept on to win by two and a half lengths from £360,000 breeze-up buy Carrados.

Murphy later described the winner as “a gorgeous son of Calyx.” The rider continued, “He did everything nicely. He travelled within himself and was well on top on the line. You’d love his demeanour, he has a very laidback attitude.”

Sunday’s race has a history of producing smart horses, with previous victors including Group winners Asymmetric, Boynton, Guildsman (Wootton Bassett) and Main Edition (Zoffany).

Principality is a half-brother to Listed winner and Group 3 second Bright Stripes (Starspangledbanner). Owned by Bull Construction Ltd and bred by Diomed Bloodstock, he hails from the second crop of Calyx.
