American Monarch Another Two-Year-Old Winner for American Pharoah
American Pharoah sired his second 2-year-old debut winner in two days when American Monarch (2c American Pharoah x Front Range, by Giant’s Causeway) became his fourth juvenile winner this year with a victory at Saratoga.
Racing on the lawn for trainer Bill Mott, the Mike Rutherford homebred handled the 1 1/16 miles in fine style. Content to run around the fourth position close behind the leader, American Monarch raced into the stretch four wide to enter a race to the finish with the leader.
Digging deep, American Monarch pushed to the line and was able to build a half-length lead by the time the duo crossed the wire.
American Monarch is the first foal out of Giant’s Causeway’s Grade II-placed Front Range, a daughter of four-time Grade I winner Lakeway. That mare is the dam of four stakes horses from five winners, led by Listed winner Sluice, who is the dam of Grade I winner Mushka with another daughter producing Thunder Gulch’s stakes winner Dattts Our Girl.
Last year’s Champion Freshman Sire and leading multiple categories in this year’s Second-Crop Sire rankings American Pharoah’s second crop is off to a good start with four 2-year-old winners and the Group III-placed Van Gogh leading the way.
