American Pharoah head shot

American Pharoah 2-Year-Olds In Demand at OBS

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah’s third crop 2-year-olds earned three of the top 10 spots at the OBS March Sales of Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale this week, led by the $600,000 second highest priced 2-year-old overall.

Second only to Practical Joke’s $750,000 filly, the American Pharoah filly out of Henny Jenney brought $600,000 from the Colombo Bloodstock Agency on behalf of Northern Farm’s Teruya Yoshida. Sold by the Wavertree Stables consignment, the filly had stopped the clock in :20.4 for a quarter at Saturday’s breeze show.

It was the Camas Park Stud-bred’s second time through the ring after bringing $200,000 at last September’s Keeneland Yearling Sale.

The Henny Hughes mare Henny Jenney is a multiple stakes winning half-sister to multiple stakes winner and Grade I-placed Zeewat and stakes placed I’m Wanted. The family also includes multiple graded stakes winner and Grade I-placed Cozi Rosie, multiple graded stakes winner Lexicon, and stakes winner My Captain. Henny Jenney visited American Pharoah’s fellow Triple Crown-winning studmate Justify last year.

"She's very athletic, powerful, she has a great mind, and she was a good walker," Eugenio Colombo told Blood-Horse. "Everything was perfect and she's perfectly sound. I vetted several horses and they all came out with minor issues but not her. She was perfect."

In an OBS leaderboard that saw six 2-year-olds sired by Coolmore America stallions in the top 10, American Pharoah had two tie at $550,000 alongside a group that included Munnings’ Session 1 topper out of Show Me.

Going through the ring as Hip 504, American Pharoah’s filly out of Forgotten Miss was consigned by Eddie Woods and sold to Sean Flanagan.

Bred by Mike Connelly and out of a half-sister to multiple Grade III winner Woodlander, the filly’s dam is also a full-sister to stakes winner Admiral Alex. The family is full of producers with Forgotten Miss’s half-sisters producing Grade II winners Azar and Coal Front and stakes winner Conquest Titan.

Three hips later, American Pharoah’s Cove Springs-bred colt out of French Passport sold from the Coastal Equine consignment to Hideyuki Mori for $550,000.

From the family of Got Stormy, who added another graded stakes victory to her resume only a few weeks before the sale, the colt is out of a half-sister to multiple Grade II winner and Grade I-placed Smooth Air and Grade II winner Overdriven.

Among American Pharaoh’s other 2-year-olds to sell was a $350,000 filly out of a half-sister to Grade III winner Saham from the family of multiple Grade I winner McKinzie. That filly was sold to Kazuko Yoshida from the Kings Equine consignment.

In all, American Pharoah saw his five sold average $430,000 with a median of $550,000 this week at OBS. It continues a strong 2021 for the stallion, who is leading all North American third-crop sires by stakes winners (4), graded stakes winners (2), Grade I winners (1), and Grade 1 horses (2) this year.
