American Pharoah Filly Earns First Graded Stakes Victory in G3 Beaugay
It was a third stakes performer of the weekend for Triple Crown winner American Pharoah on Sunday when Marketsegmentation (4f American Pharoah x Lonelily, by Medaglia d’Oro) won the Grade III Beaugay Stakes.
Marketsegmentation was never far behind the pacesetting Evvie Jets in the 1 1/16-mile turf race, pushing that one around the track. Irad Ortiz Jr. let the filly relax in her position until they hit the top of the stretch and he cued her to overtake that runner.
The race favorite was kept to task from that point forward with Ortiz Jr. tapping her a few times before turning to a strong handride in the final sixteenth. That strategy worked well with Marketsegmentation winning by 2 ½ lengths for her first graded stakes victory.
The winner of four of six starts, the Chad Brown-trained Marketsegmentation won her first listed stakes last out before this victory.
“Marketsegmentation might stretch out. She was sharp enough to be prominent, but also, she’s a big, powerful horse that seems to motor through the wire in her works and her races right on out. It wouldn’t surprise me if she could get a mile and a quarter. We’ll just have to think about it,” Brown said of a potential next start in the Grade I Just a Game or Grade I New York Stakes.
Marcus Stables-bred Marketsegmentation was a $200,000 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale purchase by De Meric Stables and races for Klaravich Stables.
Marketsegmentation is one of two winners from four to race out of Lonelily. That mare is out of a half-sister to European champion Fasliyev and full sister to Group III winner Kamarinskaya in addition to Butterfly Cove. That mare is the dam of multiple champion Misty For Me and champion Ballydoyle.
Misty For Me produced European champion U S Navy Flag and three-time Group I winner Roly Poly. A young broodmare, Ballydoyle has already produced Fastnet Rock’s stakes winner and Group II placed Monday and Justify’s Group III placed Red Riding Hood.
Marketsegmentation is the 21st graded stakes worldwide graded stakes winner with 11 of those coming in the United States. The stallion has sired graded stakes winners in seven different countries.
