Cupid Son Earns Canadian Championship Honors
Cupid’s Grade III winning son God of Love (3c Cupid x No Wonder, by Three Wonders) became his sire’s first champion on Thursday when named Canadian Champion 2-Year-Old Male.
God Of Love broke his maiden in his second start with a 1 ¾ length victory in the Cup and Saucer Stakes at Woodbine. Two starts later, he backed that up with a win in the Grade III Grey Stakes to end his season.
Trained by Mark Casse for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber, God of Love was bred in Ontario by William Graham. He is one of two stakes winners for No Wonder, who also produced the stakes winning Muskoka Wonder. No Wonder is a half-sister to the Grade I-winning Weemissfrankie as well.
Munnings' dual-fillies classic winner Munnyfor Ro (4f Munnings x Repartee, by Distorted Humor) was named Canadian Champion 3-Year-Old Filly after winning three stakes in 2021. That triple included two legs of the Canadian Triple Tiara and the Ontario Damsel Stakes. Taking on males in the Queen's Plate, she also finished fourth by just 1 3/4 lengths.
Munnyfor Ro is one of two winners from three to race out of her dam, who is a daughter of stakes winner Dubai Dancer. Under Munnyfor Ro's third dam are the Grade I winners Little Belle and Dickinson and her fourth dam is the champion and Grade I winning Flagbird.
American Pharoah’s daughter Skygaze (5m American Pharoah x Skyscape, by Marquetry) was named Canada’s Champion Older Main Track Female.
Trained by Casse for Tracy Farmer, Skygaze ended last season with a win in the Grade III Maple Leaf Stakes. Her five 2021 starts were led by three victories, including another stakes win in the Listed Belle Mahone Stakes. She was also second in the Grade III Ontario Matron Stakes and third in the Grade III Trillium Stakes.
Skygaze is one of three stakes winners for her dam alongside Grade II winner Sky Cape and stakes winner Sunny Skies. Bred by Normandy Farm, Skygaze was a $300,000 purchase by Farmer from the Gainesway consignment at Keeneland September.
