Munnings’ Chief Cicatriz Registers Third Consecutive Stakes Win

It was a third straight stakes victory for Munnings’ Grade III winner Chief Cicatriz (6g Munnings x Super Buggy, by Grand Slam) on Saturday when he won the KLAQ Handicap at Sunland Park.

Going off as the heavy favorite, Chief Cicatriz shot to the lead straight out of the gate in the five furlong affair with Elvin Gonzales aboard. The Shawn H. Davis trainee was put under pressure and headed in the turn but Gonzales wasn’t concerned, giving the gelding a confident ride in the stretch to win by three quarters of a length.

The victory was Chief Cicatriz’s fifth of 2019, with four coming in stakes races, and took his career earnings above $460,000 for breeder-owner Roy Gene Evans.

Chief Cicatriz is the first foal out of his winning dam Super Buggy, who has produced 100 percent winners from her three foals of racing age. A half-sister to the dam of Champion Suggestive Boy, Super Buggy was covered again by Munnings in 2019.

Munnings has had a banner year in 2019 with 11 stakes winners, including four juvenile stakes victors. The stallion in the sire of 36 stakes winners overall, led by I’m A Chatterbox and El Deal.
