Practical Joke Colt Romps in G3 Dwyer
Domestic Product (3c Practical Joke x Good and Services, by Paynter) made easy work of Saturday’s Grade III Dwyer Stakes with a 7 ½ length romp in the race.
He was happy to race just over a length off the leading Billal for much of the one-mile dirt race as that one was pressured by another runner down the backstretch. Around the turn, Domestic Product made his move and took the lead as they hit the stretch.
Flavien Prat gave him a few taps in the final furlong as he raced away to win by 7 ½ lengths with the third placed runner 12 ½ lengths behind.
"He was traveling very well,” said Prat. “I felt in control the whole race and he responded really well turning for home. He took a very nice breather around the turn - I didn't know how much the leader had left, but when I called on him, he responded very well.”
A Grade I Kentucky Derby runner earlier this year, the colt also won the Grade III Tampa Bay Derby in March. Trained by Chad Brown as a homebred for Klaravich Stables, he has finished in the top two in five of his eight starts.
The colt is one of two winners from two to race out of a half-sister to the stakes winning Kenda. They are out of the stakes winning Indian Legend, who is also a half-sister to the Grade III winning Cherokee Queen.
Domestic Product was the first of two stakes winners for Practical Joke on Saturday with Money Supply winning later in the day.
