More Stakes Success for Munnings Colt
Consistent colt King Kranz (3c Munnings x Queen Congie, by Henny Hughes) broke through for his second stakes success when taking out the $100,000 Gold Fever Stakes at Belmont on Friday.
Grade II placed last year at two when placed in four of his five starts, the John Terranova trained colt broke his maiden in January and has been thereabouts in subsequent runs.
He settled in fourth position and found the line well to take the six furlong contest by three-quarters of a length.
"He likes the mud,” said Tonja Terranova, assistant to her husband John Terranova.
“Kendrick [Carmouche] just let him settle a little bit--he didn't show the speed he showed at Aqueduct. He said at the eighth pole he knew he was going to win; the horse kind of pinned his ears and went on. He's a very, very resilient horse. He thrives on running and training. He's done nothing but grow and mature and put on weight. He's the picture of health.
“He's being pointed to the [GII] Woody Stephens [S. June 11]."
Running for Zayat Stables, King Kranz has two wins and six placings from 10 starts earning over $280,000 in $146,000 in prizemoney and was a $95,000 OBS March 2YO Sale purchase.
He is the first winner for Queen Congie, a half-sister to grade I placed stakes-winner King Congie.
