Turned Aside Adds Second Stakes Win to Resume
A Saratoga Grade III winner for American Pharoah this summer, Turned Aside (3c American Pharoah x Sustained, by War Front) added a second stakes win to his record in the Listed Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship Stakes on Saturday.
Racing over six furlongs on the Aqueduct turf against his elders, Turned Aside raced just behind the leaders a few paths off the rail. The colt joined the leaders as they entered the stretch and the race was on.
The American Pharoah son took over the lead in the final furlong and started to pull away as they raced toward the wire. Grade I winner El Tormenta cut his lead down to 1¼ lengths in the end but proved to be no match for the colt, who has now won two stakes in his last three starts.
“He broke good and he's a very nice horse,” said jockey Jose Lezcano. “He can run on anything. I got my position and let him grow into the race little by little. I let the two inside horses go and when it was time to go, I let him pick it up.”
Bred by the late Paul Pompa and trained for his Estate by Linda Rice, Turned Aside now has four wins in nine starts for $241,967 in earnings.
He is the only runner out of the Grade III-placed Sustained, who hails from the family of Grade II winner Good And Tough. The family also includes Listed winner and stakes producer Flashy Four and Grade II winner Desert Party.
The sire of 10 stakes winners and six graded stakes winners in 2020 alone, last year’s Champion Freshman Sire leads all second crop sires in nearly every category.
