Turned Aside Adds Second Win to Resume for American Pharoah
Turned Aside (2c American Pharoah x Sustained, by War Front) continued a top season for his sire when registering his second career victory on Wednesday for owner-breeder Paul Pompa Jr. at Aqueduct on the turf.
Running over six furlongs as the favorite, the colt broke well and was happy to settle two paths off the rail just behind the leader. When the field swung for home, jockey Jose Lezcano took his mount just a bit wider and rapidly drew even with the leader.
Turned Aside won the stretch duel just outside the final furlong before pulling away to comfortably win by 3¼ lengths. It was the fourth top three finish in five starts for the Linda Rice trainee, who took his total earnings to $108,992 with the victory.
Turned Aside is out of the Grade III-placed War Front daughter Sustained, who hails from the family of Grade II winners Good And Tough and Desert Party. The colt is one of two winners out of War Front daughters for American Pharoah with his other being Grade I Hopeful Stakes fourth American Butterfly.
Triple Crown winner and leading First-Crop Sire American Pharoah’s stallion career is off to a fairy tale beginning with 23 winners including four stakes winners and nine stakes horses, led by Grade II Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Four Wheel Drive.
