Turned Aside Impressive 18th Winner for American Pharoah
Only a few hours after Hong Kong became American Pharoah’s 17th winner, Turned Aside (2c American Pharoah x Sustained, by War Front) easily broke his maiden to give American Pharoah an impressive 18th winner from his first crop when the colt broke his maiden at Belmont Park for breeder-owner Paul Pompa, Jr.
Racing over six furlongs on the turf, Turned Aside went off as the favorite and raced in second just a length behind fellow American Pharoah runner Menelik (American Pharoah x Golden Sheba, by Coronado’s Quest). As the field entered the stretch, Turned Aside flew past the leader and built a large lead under a hand ride by Jose Lezcano. It was another impressive winning margin for runners by American Pharoah with Turned Aside winning by an easy four lengths for trainer Linda Rice.
It was the third start for Turned Aside, who has hit the board in all three of his career starts for earnings of $65,250. The colt is out of the Grade III-placed Sustained and hails from the family of Grade II winners Good And Tough and Desert Party.
American Pharoah tops all American first-crop sires with 18 winners and has already sired four stakes winners with Grade II winner Sweet Melania, Grade III winners Four Wheel Drive and Maven and Listed winner Another Miracle. The stallion has sired nine stakes horses overall including the Grade I-placed duo of American Theorem and Monarch of Egypt.
