G2 Coventry Stakes for flying Holy Roman 2yo
There looked great depth to Navan’s six-furlong juvenile maiden on Monday evening but nothing could match the efforts of exciting newcomer Romanised (2c Holy Roman Emperor-Romantic Venture, by Indian Ridge).
Owned by Hong Kong-based Robert Ng, the Holy Roman Emperor colt got up in the closing stages to see off his 15 rivals with authority.
Trainer Ken Condon has always held the Monica Aherne-bred juvenile in high regard and nominated the G2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot as a target.
“We liked him at home,” said Condon. “He has been working well right from the start. Shane (Foley) said he missed the break a little bit but he was happy to do that. He was able to follow some principals.
"He travels through a race like a good horse. He could be a Coventry Stakes horse. He'll be entered in the Norfolk as well and I suppose maybe the Marble Hill.
"There was chat about a lot of horses in that race. I'd say it was a very good maiden. Put it this way, the win is not a surprise as we do like him. With the man that owns him, he's not going to be sold. It's nice to have a horse like him. He has a good pedigree and has a big future I hope. He has a nice relaxed way of doing things and he seems to stay as well."
