Another day, another Derby for incredible Galileo

Just 24 hours after siring Epsom Derby winner Ruler Of The World (3c Galileo-Love Me True, by Kingmambo), Galileo was the toast of Chantilly when responsible for the hero of the French equivalent.

The Wertheimer brothers’ home-bred Intello (3c Galileo-Impressionnante, by Danehill) ran out a brilliant two-length winner of the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club, the French Derby, under Olivier Peslier. Holy Roman Emperor colt Morandi (3c Holy Roman Emperor-Vezina, by Bering) finished an excellent second.

Intello, trained by Andre Fabre, would have remained unbeaten if he had not finished an unlucky third on his previous start in the French 2,000 Guineas.

“He is a very good horse who has stamina and speed. The race went as planned, I positioned him where I wanted to and he quickened nicely when I asked him,” Peslier told PA Sport. “Considering what he beat at Newmarket (in the Feilden Stakes, where Newmarket 2000 Guineas second Glory Awaits was third) he certainly is one of the best three-year-olds around, if not the best three-year-old.

"I think will stay a mile and a half, but don't forget there is a lot of speed on his dam's side. Intello did extremely well in the French Guineas from a bad draw. He is a very easy horse to ride and I think he has a great future.”

Joint owner-breeder Gerard Wertheimer told the Racing Post: “I can't say we're really surprised. He ran very well in the Poule d'Essai where he was a little unlucky. That's why we aimed here.”
