Charles certainly Great at Newbury
Progressive juvenile Charles The Great (2c Holy Roman Emperor x Jojeema, by Barathea) gave connections a bumper pay day with a gutsy success in the valuable Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury.
Andrew Balding’s charge was always to the fore in the five-furlong contest but had to be kept up to his work in the closing stages for a short-head verdict over the fast-finishing Lily’s Angel.
"He made all the running when he won at Windsor and I quite fancied him for Ascot (10th in Norfolk Stakes) but he got behind and I don't think he liked that," said winning jockey Jimmy Fortune.
"It's not ideal to make the all in these kind of races. He's a very nice horse."
Balding told sportinglife.com: "He got stuck a bit behind at Royal Ascot and we just thought he would be happier making the running.
"I'm really happy with him, he's in several of the big Tattersalls Millions races at Newmarket and he will be suited by the step up to six furlongs."
