Stem (Calyx) Impresses At Newbury On Debut

Exciting Calyx Colt Bolts Up On Debut At Newbury

Stem (2c Calyx – Princess Cleopatra, by Bernardini) could hardly have been more impressive when bolting up by nine and a half lengths at Newbury on Saturday.

Richard Hannon’s newcomer was partnered by Ryan Moore in the seven furlong novice stakes and raced toward the back of the field in the early stages. Improving from halfway, he was ridden approaching the two furlong marker and ran on to lead soon after, before easing clear.

Peter and Ross Doyle’s €120,000 breeze-up buy is owned by Mrs Johnny de la Hey. Bred by Camas Park, Summerhill and Oak Tree, he completed the first leg of a juvenile double on the day for Calyx.

Later at Wolverhampton, Nahash (2c Calyx – Hawaajis, by Dansili) made all to win the seven furlong maiden in good style under Adam Farragher.

James Horton’s charge finished a promising third on debut last month and was sent off second-favourite on his second start. Always in command, he kept on well when ridden inside the final furlong to win by a length and a half, with another length and a half back to the favourite Jiff’s Army (Saxon Warrior) in third.

The promising Calyx colt is owned by Ahmad Alotaibi and was bred by Erwin Heap.
