Exciting Calyx Colt Proves A Cut Above

Hot Fuss (2c Calyx – Natural Bloom, by Galileo) followed up his smart performance in the Chesham Stakes to run out an impressive winner at Salisbury on Saturday.

A promising fourth on debut, the Tom Dascombe-trained colt was beaten just a length and a quarter at Royal Ascot, despite being bumped in the closing stages. The performance saw him sent off favourite for the seven furlong novice stakes, with Liam Keniry riding the bay to make all. Joined three furlongs from home, he drew clear with one rival before being headed a furlong later, but soon regained the advantage. Drawing clear inside the final furlong, he won by five and a half lengths, going away.

A return to Stakes company is presumably now on the cards for Hot Fuss, who is owned by Keith, David and Stephen Trowbridge. Bought at the breeze-up sales for 120,000gns, the exciting colt was bred by Sir Robert Ogden out of the Galileo mare Natural Bloom.

It continues an impressive start at stud by Calyx, who celebrated Group 2 success a day earlier when Persian Dreamer won the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes in fine style. Other Stakes performers from his first crop include Group 2 Norfolk Stakes second Malc and Group 2 Prix Robert Papin third Classic Flower.
