German-trained Holy Roman colt stars in Haydock G3
Amarillo (4c Holy Roman Emperor-Alte Kunst, by Royal Academy), trained by Peter Schiergen in Germany, made a successful raid on the G3 Timeform Jury Stakes at Haydock on Saturday.
The Juergen Imm-bred Holy Roman Emperor colt, who finished second in an Italian G1 last season, held on in the seven-furlong contest to score from the fast-finishing Pastoral Player.
“I knew it was very tight but I thought I’d got his nose in front. He put his head just in front on the winning post,” said jockey Andrasch Starke.
“He’s a very good horse but has needed fast-run races and we knew he had the possibility to win a race like this. There was a good pace and I was out there in front a little bit soon as there is a long straight. He’s a very nice horse and it was a very good performance. I think seven furlongs is better than a mile for him.”
Trainer Peter Schiergen added: “Everything was good and went OK for him. We have no races over the distance of 1,400 metres for him in Germany so came here. I would like to come back here for another race.”
