Camelot
It was by only three-quarters of a length that Camelot failed to become the first Triple Crown winner since Nijinsky in 1970 and only the second since Bahram in 1935. His sire Montjeu has been one of the greatest classic influences of modern times but it was Camelot’s speed which made him exceptional. He cruised to victory in the Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy at two and became Montjeu’s only classic winner over a mile, in the 2,000 Guineas.
Camelot is now a powerful classic influence, as was underlined by the fact that he sired first, third and fifth in the 2024 Arc. He now has 12 Gr.1 winners to his credit, including Bluestocking, Los Angeles and Luxembourg in 2024.
Although Camelot’s second dam is a daughter of DANEHILL, mares from this line are proving the bedrock of his success. His Irish Oaks winner Even So and his dual American Gr.1 winner Santa Barbara have dams by DANEHILL and are therefore inbred 4x2. Camelot creates 4x3 with mares by Danehill’s sons. He is doing especially well with daughters of DANSILI, with this cross supplying first and third in the 2024 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. There is also a Gr.3 winner out of a grand-daughter of DANSILI, so daughters of ZOFFANY and BATED BREATH should suit. Camelot also has Group winners out of daughters of DANEHILL DANCER (the multiple Gr.1 winner Luxembourg and Gr.3 winner Degraves), DUKE OF MARMALADE (Cleveland and Lady Wannabe), EXCEED AND EXCEL (Current Option), FASTNET ROCK (Youth Spirit) and HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR (Wait Forever).
He has also enjoyed Group success with mares by grandsons of DANEHILL, notably siring the Gr.1-winning Wonderment from a grand-daughter of TIGER HILL.
The GREEN DESERT branch is also reaping rich rewards with Camelot. A mare by GREEN DESERT produced the Gr.1 winner Athena and the Gr.3 winner Goddess to him. His Group performers out of CAPE CROSS mares are headed by Russian Camelot, a dual Gr.1 winner in Australia. He should sire talented middle- distance stayers from daughters of SEA THE STARS. Camelot also sired the dual Gr.1 winner Sir Dragonet from a daughter of OASIS DREAM, plus the Gr.3 2yo winner King’s Harlequin from an INVINCIBLE SPIRIT mare.
He has sired Group winners from daughters of three generations of stallions from the STORM CAT male line. The classic-winning Latrobe, Oaks second Pink Dogwood and Gr.3 winner Prydwen are out of SHAMARDAL mares, the Gr.3 winner Skyward is out of a GIANT’S CAUSEWAY mare and the French Gr.3 winner Pollara had a dam by STORM CAT. Altogether he has 5 BTWs (16%) with SHAMARDAL mares. He has now sired the dual Gr.2 winner Sober from 4 foals out of LOPE DE VEGA mares. This suggests he merits more mares by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, SHAMARDAL, LOPE DE VEGA and BLUE POINT.
Camelot’s smart son Hunting Horn is out of a mare by INDIAN RIDGE, who also sired the second dam of his Gr.3-winning daughter King’s Harlequin.
MR PROSPECTOR is back in the fourth generation of Camelot’s foals, via KINGMAMBO. His 2024 Irish Derby winner Los Angeles is inbred 3x3 to KINGMAMBO. More MR PROSPECTOR blood is attractive in view of the scale of Montjeu’s success with other MR PROSPECTOR line stallions. Camelot’s very useful son English King has a ZAFONIC dam and his Gr.2-placed daughter Yorokobi is one of only 3 foals out of WOOTTON BASSETT mares. He has further black-type winners out of mares by GONE WEST’s sons JOHAR and GRAND SLAM and grandsons RAVEN’S PASS and ELUSIVE CITY, including Gr.2 winners Saracen Knight and Living Legend. Camelot already has a Gr.3 winner and a Group-placed Listed winner from his first 3 starters out of DUBAWI mares.
Camelot’s 19 foals out of GALILEO mares include 4 black-type winners, including 2024 Arc fifth Sevenna’s Knight. These are inbred 3x3 to SADLER’S WELLS, and Sir Dragonet, Russian Camelot and Current Option are others inbred 3x3 to SADLER’S WELLS, while Sammarco – out of a grand-daughter of IN THE WINGS - is inbred 3x4. Camelot also has Group-placed LWs out of daughters of AUSTRALIA and NEW APPROACH.
Camelot’s first Group winner, Fighting Irish, had a dam by PIVOTAL and he should suit daughters of SIYOUNI.
