The top sprinter Pivotal has played a significant role in Galileo’s success story, with his daughters supplying Galileo with 12 black-type winners from 39 foals, headed by the outstanding Gr.1 winners Love, Hermosa, Magical, Hydrangea and Rhododendron. Now Pivotal’s son Siyouni has sired the excellent Sottsass from a daughter of Galileo. When Sottsass landed the 2020 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, he was landing his third Gr.1 victory, following his 2-length defeat of Persian King in the Prix du Jockey-Club and his triumph in the Prix Ganay.
It mustn’t be forgotten that the 2009 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Siyouni has achieved sire success largely with offspring sired at only €7,000. His early success led to a rise in his fee to €20,000, at which he sired Sottsass, and then further rises to €45,000, at which he sired the 2020 Dewhurst Stakes winner St Mark’s Basilica from another Galileo mare. His €100,000 progeny will start to race in 2022.
Sottsass’ dam Starlet’s Sister has developed into one of the most accomplished broodmares of recent years. Her first foal, Sistercharlie, collected four Gr.1 successes on her way to being voted the Champion US turf female of 2018.
The daughter of Myboycharlie was to gain three more Gr.1 wins in 2019.
Sottsass will have Danehill and Sadler’s Wells in the fourth generation of his foals’ pedigrees but his three lines of Mr Prospector will be back in the sixth generation, so is no obstacle to further lines. His first classic winner, Ervedya, is one of Siyouni’s three black-type horses out of daughters of KING’S BEST. KINGMAMBO sired the second dam of the smart Sacred Life. MACHIAVELLIAN sired the second dam of Dream And Do, the 2020 winner of the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, and is also the broodmare sire of Gr.2 winner Volta. GONE WEST sired the second dam of Siyouni’s Gr.3 winner Siyoushake and GONE WEST’s son ZAMINDAR is the broodmare sire of three of Siyouni’s black-type horses, including Zaykava. DUBAWI ranks as the broodmare sire of the Gr.2-placed 2020 2yo Reve De Vol and DUBAWI’s son MAKFI ranks as the broodmare sire of one of Siyouni’s Listed winners.
Mares from the STORM CAT male line have been working well with Siyouni. He has black-type winners out of daughters of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, SHAMARDAL and LOPE DE VEGA. Daughters of LOPE DE VEGA, with his close inbreeding to MACHIAVELLIAN, could be especially suitable for Sottsass. SIYOUNI also has a black-type winner out of a JOHANNESBURG mare, which opens the door to daughters of SCAT DADDY and NO NAY NEVER for Sottsass.
Sottsass is out of a GALILEO mare, as is the successful young sire NIGHT OF THUNDER. NIGHT OF THUNDER has a couple of winners out of TEOFILO mares which are consequently inbred 3x3 to GALILEO. New Approach has the Gr.1-winning 2YO Mac Swiney inbred 2x3 to the great GALILEO. Siyouni has Group winners out of several SADLER’S WELLS line mares, including daughters of MONTJEU, his son AUTHORIZED (Gr.1 E.P. Taylor Stakes winner Etoile), EL PRADO and BEAT HOLLOW. He also has several black-type horses with second dams by SADLER’S WELLS.
Siyouni sired two of his best winners from DANZIG line mares, siring the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Dream And Do from a grand-daughter by LIBRETTIST and the Prix de Diane winner Laurens from a CAPE CROSS mare. Sottsass should therefore suit daughters by the likes of OASIS DREAM, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, SEA THE STARS, LAWMAN and KINGMAN. Sea The Stars mares would create 4x3 to the exceptional Urban Sea. Mares by such as FASTNET ROCK, DANSILI, EXCEED AND EXCEL, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, KODIAC and ROCK OF GIBRALTAR will create 4x3 to DANEHILL, but the likes of ZOFFANY, BATED BREATH, CHOISIR and MASTERCRAFTSMAN move the inbreeding to 4x4.
Siyouni has two black-type winners with mares from the ROBERTO male line and his Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes winner St Mark’s Basilica has a second dam by LEAR FAN.
Sottsass and his fellow classic winner Laurens both have 2nd dams from the NIJINSKY line. Mares with some NIJINSKY blood should suit Sottsass.
The FORLI line is responsible for two black-type winners by Siyouni, through TIROL and EFISIO.
