St Mark's Basilica

St Mark’s Basilica joined an elite group of horses, including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, El Gran Senor, Shamardal, Teofilo, New Approach and Frankel, which have followed up a victory in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes at two with a classic victory.

In fact, he won two classics – the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey-Club – before defeating the older horses in the Eclipse Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes. A son of the Group-winning 2YOs Siyouni and Cabaret, St Mark’s Basilica has the distinction of being the second “Guineas” winner produced by his dam, following the 2019 2,000 Guineas winner Magna Grecia.

Three of Siyouni’s six Gr.1 winners are inbred with four generations to DANZIG. Mares from the GREEN DESERT branch of the DANZIG line therefore have obvious appeal for St Mark’s Basilica, as it was INVINCIBLE SPIRIT who sired his classic-winning half-brother. Siyouni sired another of his classic winners, the Prix de Diane winner Laurens, from a CAPE CROSS mare. St Mark’s Basilica should also suit daughters of OASIS DREAM, SEA THE STARS, LAWMAN and KINGMAN. Sea The Stars mares would create 4x3 to the exceptional Urban Sea. Mares by such as FASTNET ROCK, DANSILI, EXCEED AND EXCEL, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, KODIAC and ROCK OF GIBRALTAR will create 4x3 to DANEHILL, but the likes of ZOFFANY, BATED BREATH, CHOISIR and MASTERCRAFTSMAN move the inbreeding to 4x4.

Siyouni has Group winners out of mares by KINGMAMBO’s sons KING’S BEST (the classic-winning Ervedya) and LEMON DROP KID, as well as a Group performer out of a DUBAI DESTINATION mare. KINGMAMBO sired the second dam of the smart Sacred Life. MACHIAVELLIAN sired the second dam of Dream And Do, winner of the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, and is also the broodmare sire of classic-placed Gr.2 winner Volta. There are also good winners out of mares by MACHIAVELLIAN’s sons ALMUTAWAKEL and MEDICEAN. GONE WEST’s son ZAMINDAR is the broodmare sire of three of Siyouni’s black-type horses, including Zaykava. This suggests that daughters of ZAFONIC, RAVEN’S PASS, IFFRAAJ and WOOTTON BASSETT could suit St Mark’s Basilica, as could daughters of NAYEF and TAMAYUZ. Siyouni also has Listed winners out of mares by DUBAWI and his son MAKFI.

Mares from three generations of the STORM CAT male line have been working well with Siyouni. He has black-type winners out of daughters of GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, SHAMARDAL and LOPE DE VEGA, with SHAMARDAL having three black-type winners and the Gr.1-placed Marieta among his 13 foals. Daughters of LOPE DE VEGA, with his close inbreeding to MACHIAVELLIAN, could be especially suitable for St Mark’s Basilica. SIYOUNI also has a black-type winner out of a JOHANNESBURG mare, which opens the door to daughters of SCAT DADDY and NO NAY NEVER.

St Mark’s Basilica is out of a GALILEO mare, as is NIGHT OF THUNDER, one of the leading young stallions of the last few years. NIGHT OF THUNDER has a Gr.3 winner out of a TEOFILO mare which is consequently inbred 3x3 to GALILEO, and New Approach has a classic winner inbred 2x3 to the many-times Champion Sire. Mares by TEOFILO and FRANKEL would also produce 4x4 to DANEHILL, but daughters of NATHANIEL, NEW APPROACH and GLENEAGLES avoid the Danehill inbreeding.

Siyouni has Group winners out of several SADLER’S WELLS line mares, including daughters of MONTJEU, his sons MOTIVATOR and AUTHORIZED (Gr.1 winner Etoile), EL PRADO, POLIGLOTE and BEAT HOLLOW. He also has Gr.2 and Gr.3 with second dams by SADLER’S WELLS. Mares by CAMELOT would appreciate the precocity of St Mark’s Basilica and his parents.

Sottsass and his fellow classic winner Laurens both have 2nd dams from the NIJINSKY line. Mares with some NIJINSKY blood should therefore suit St Mark’s Basilica.
