The highest-rated 2yo trained in Ireland, Ten Sovereigns won his first two starts – including the Gr.3 Round Tower S. - with such ease that he started a very hot favourite for the Gr.1 Middle Park S. over six furlongs. He retained his unbeaten record in this historic event, crossing the line with his ears pricked, to earn a Timeform rating of 120p, the “p” signifying that he was likely to improve further. This he did, with the pinnacle of his 3yo season coming in the Gr.1 July Cup over six furlongs. Tackling older horses for the first time, he was in the front rank throughout and won by nearly three lengths, even though his nearest pursuers, Advertise and Fairyland, have five Gr.1 successes between them. Ten Sovereigns had earlier started favourite to win the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas and ran well over the longer trip, hampered by racing on the slower part of the track. In also winning a Gr.1 as a 3yo Ten Sovereigns went one better than his highly successful young sire No Nay Never, whose win in the Gr.1 Prix Morny made him one of 11 European 2yo Group winners sired by the outstanding Scat Daddy.
Ten Sovereign can be expected to make a fast start to his stallion career. His sire No Nay Never was Europe’s leading first-crop sire in 2018 and Ten Sovereigns’ grandsires Scat Daddy and Exceed And Excel were champion first-crop sire in North America and Australia respectively.
Both No Nay Never and Scat Daddy have been successful with many different broodmare sires.
The much-missed Scat Daddy owed his 45 Group/Graded winners in the northern hemisphere to 42 different broodmare sires and No Nay Never is proving similarly versatile with 29 black-type horses from his first two crops having 27 different broodmare sires.
Ten Sovereigns can be expected to follow suit. His bloodlines are largely American, the best-known European stallion in his pedigree being Danehill, who will be back in the fourth generation of Ten Sovereigns’ foals. This means that mares by sons of Danehill will create only 4x3 inbreeding to the many-times champion sire. No Nay Never owes much of his early success to mares by sons of DANEHILL, including ROCK OF GIBRALTAR (Gr.2 scorer Land Force), ORATORIO (dual Listed winner Servalan), FASTNET ROCK (Gr.2-placed Neverland Rock) and DANEHILL DANCER (Gr.1-placed The Irish Rover and Gr.3-placed We Go). Mares by KODIAC, CAMACHO, DANSILI, DYLAN THOMAS, CLODOVIL, DANETIME and HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR could suit Ten Sovereigns. Mares by the likes of CHOISIR, MASTERCRAFTSMAN and ZOFFANY create only 4x4 to Danehill.
The GREEN DESERT branch of the DANZIG line also has plenty to offer, as No Nay Never has Listed winners out of daughters of CAPE CROSS and OASIS DREAM, with OASIS DREAM also being the broodmare sire of Scat Daddy’s Gr.1-winning 2yo Sioux Nation. Mares by such as INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, LAWMAN, DESERT STYLE and KHELEYF are other likeable options.
Fast horses from the NUREYEV line could suit, such as daughters of PIVOTAL, EXCELLENT ART, CAPTAIN RIO and KYLLACHY. SIYOUNI, with his dam by DANEHILL, could be especially suitable. No Nay Never’s Listed winner All The King’s Men has a dam by PEINTRE CELEBRE.
Although No Nay Never is inbred 3x4 to MR PROSPECTOR, this outstanding American stallion will be no closer than the fifth generation of Ten Sovereigns’ offspring. No Nay Never is thriving with mares with MR PROSPECTOR blood. Arizona, a Gr.2 2yo winner in 2019, and his sister Nay Lady Nay have a dam by ENGLISH CHANNEL, a son of SMART STRIKE. Another Gr.2 winner, Chestnut Honey, has a dam by CHESTER HOUSE, whereas Celtic Beauty, who was second of 25 in the Gr.3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, has a dam by GULCH.
STORM CAT is another who will be well back in Ten Sovereigns’ foals. Ten Sovereigns should suit mares by the likes of FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND, SHAMARDAL and LOPE DE VEGA. Scat Daddy’s flying daughter Lady Aurelia is inbred 4x3 to STORM CAT and his Gr.1 winners Harmonize and Valid Point are inbred 4x4, while his Group 1-winning juvenile Sioux Nation is 5x4 to STORM BIRD.
The SADLER’S WELLS line is sure to provide Ten Sovereigns with good winners. No Nay Never already has a Gr.2-winning 2yo with a dam by SADLER’S WELLS and an impressive Listed-winning 2yo from a GALILEO mare. Mares by such as MONTJEU and HIGH CHAPARRAL are others to consider.
The SHIRLEY HEIGHTS male line has quickly made its mark with No Nay Never, with his smart 2yo Wichita having a dam by DASHING BLADE.
Mares from the quick-maturing ROYAL APPLAUSE line should help Ten Sovereigns pass on his considerable juvenile ability. Daughters of ACCLAMATION, DARK ANGEL and EQUIANO would suit.
No Nay Never sired Group winner Nikisophia from an INDIAN RIDGE mare while his Group-winning 2yos Land Force and Wichita have second dams by INDIAN RIDGE.
BLUSHING GROOM’s sons RAINBOW QUEST and RAHY collectively sired the second dam of three of No Nay Never’s black-type winners, and RAINBOW QUEST also sired the dam of one of his Listed winners.
