Mo Town’s Scorching Wins Second Stakes in Cup and Saucer
It was a second straight stakes victory for Mo Town juvenile Scorching (2c Mo Town x Samsal, by Consolidator) on Sunday when he won the Cup and Saucer Stakes at Woodbine.
The colt tracked the leader from the start in the 1 1/16-mile turf race, sitting just over two lengths behind Kokomo early. Sticking to an inside position, he made a bid from that spot in the stretch and the race was on. Grabbing the lead, he was clear of most of the field, but a late closing Ashley’s Archer was coming at him with every stride.
That runner nailed the Mo Town son at the line, but after a steward’s inquiry was awarded the race.
Trained by John Charalambous for Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch, Scorching also won the Simcoe Stakes after finishing second in his debut. The Ontario bred hails from the Huntington Stud Farm breeding program.
Scorching is a half-brother to Grade III-placed Keep Grinding and three other winners from six named foals out of the stakes placed Samsai. That mare is one of two stakes performers out of the stakes winning Willow Rush alongside the stakes winning Stormy Rush. Those in the extended family also include Footstepsinthesand’s stakes winning daughter Queen Electrica.
Mo Town juveniles have been on fire this year with 19 winners second best among all North American sires in 20204.
