Big Hopes For Impressive Camelot Colt

Seamie Heffernan described Cleveland (2c Camelot - Venus De Milo, by Marmalade) as a “Derby type” after partnering the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt to an impressive win at the Curragh on Friday.

The bay caught the eye finishing well last time out and remained over the nine furlong trip on his third start. Racing in midfield for much of the way, he made good headway from three furlongs out and led a furlong later, staying on strongly to go clear inside the final furlong. The winning margin was four lengths, as the favourite Kailash (Mastercraftsman) claimed runners-up honours.

Adding to the impressive nature of his win, Heffernan commented, “He's a very good mover and good-looking horse, I'd say he's got a big future. Derby type.”

The Coolmore homebred is out of three-time Stakes winner Venus De Milo, who finished second at Group 1 level on three occasions.

Russian Camelot kicked off a fantastic season for Camelot and his full-sister Russian Camilla (2f Camelot - Lady Babooshka, by Cape Cross) made a winning debut at Kempton earlier this week.

Trained by Sylvester Kirk for Mrs Johnny McKeever, the bay raced towards the back of the field for much of the mile contest and was asked to quicken by PJ McDonald at the two furlong pole. Switched right to challenge approaching the final furlong, she ran on well to lead close home and deny the favourite by a head.
