Camelot Colt Leads Home Group 1 Trifecta For Coolmore Sires
Los Angeles (2c Camelot - Frequential, by Dansili) struck late to deny Islandsinthestream (Wootton Bassett) in a thrilling finish to Sunday’s Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt emerged as an exciting prospect when making an impressive debut last month and stepped up to ten furlongs on his second start. Settled in midfield by Christophe Soumillon, he was ridden approaching the two furlong marker and ran on strongly to challenge a furlong later. The son of Camelot stayed on best of all to lead close home, beating fellow Irish raider Islandsinthestream (Wootton Bassett) by a neck, with another three-parts of the length back to the winner’s stablemate Illinois (Galileo) in third.
It marked a fifth win in the Group 1 for Aidan O’Brien, who later said, “Christophe was very happy with him. He's a very big horse and you'd imagine he's going to be much better next year. Joseph's horse is a good colt and Illinois ran a stormer, but Christophe said Los Angeles could be a Classic horse.”
Bookmarkers responded by halving Los Angeles’ price for the Epsom Derby, with the market currently headed by stablemate City Of Troy. Owned by Coolmore partners with Westerberg, the talented colt was bred by Lynch Bages Ltd and Longfield Stud. He is one of three Group performers by Camelot out of Frequential, who has a yearling colt by No Nay Never.
