Camelot Filly Draws Clear In Leopardstown Maiden

A step up in class is on the cards for Sugaree (3f Camelot - Pakora, by Green Desert) after running out an impressive winner of the mile and a half fillies’ maiden at Leopardstown.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained grey caught the eye over course and distance last month when finishing well to take third, with the second having since won at the Curragh. Sent off favourite under Declan McDonogh on Thursday, she tracked the leader for much of the way and asserted after the two furlong marker. Ridden clear inside the final furlong, she led by three lengths on the line, as promising newcomer Alalcance (Mastercraftsman) took second.

Speaking after the race, assistant trainer Brendan Powell said, “Declan (McDonogh) hadn’t ridden her before but he said she gave him a nice feel. I think she's got a nice future; she stays well. She's a big filly as well and I'm sure there is improvement in her, without doubt she'll get black-type.”

Sugaree was bought by Dan Hayden at the Goffs Orby Sale for €200,000 on behalf of owner Blue Devil Racing Stable LLC. The daughter of Camelot was bred and sold by Pier House Stud.
