G1 Wonder filly for Camelot

Camelot’s daughter Wonderment (2f Camelot-Wiwilia, by Konigstiger) confirmed the promise of her previous starts when bringing a brilliant G1 victory for her sire at Saint-Cloud on Saturday.

The Nicolas Clement-trained filly, a two-length winner at Evreux on August 26, was unlucky to lose out in the G3 Prix de Conde on her only other run.

She faced a strong field in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud on Saturday but finished with a wet sail to deny the first-crop Australia colt Sydney Opera House (2c Australia-Sitara, by Salse) in the colours of US-based owner Stella Thayer.

“She’s been a progressive filly, who won well first time out, but it was impossible to make up ground from behind in a slowly run Prix de Conde last time,” said Clement.

“It was a completely different affair today as there was a good pace up front, which was favourable for the late closers, and she benefited from a very good ride by Stephane Pasquier. She was a good buy at Deauville for an American client and I hope this is the beginning of a fairytale story. We hope it continues next year after she enjoys a good winter.”

Bred by Manfred Wurtenberger & Reinhard Stockli, Wonderment was bought for a bargain 60,000 euros at last year’s Arqana October Yearling Sale.

Sydney Opera House was a second G1 place-getter on the day for Australia with Western Australia (2c Australia-What A Treasure, by Cadeaux Genereux) claiming third spot in the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on the same afternoon.
