Progressive Camelot Filly Captures Group 1 Prize
Sunny Queen (3f Camelot - Suivi, by Darshaan) provided Camelot with his fourth Group 1 winner of the season when staying on strongly to land the Grosser Preis Von Bayern at Munich on Sunday.
The Henk Grewe-trained filly announced herself as something special when losing her maiden tag by eight and a half lengths in a Listed contest in May and went on to gain her second Stakes success last month. Beaten a short head last time out, she returned to a mile and a half on her first start at Group 1 level and first time carrying the silks of Cayton Park Stud.
Racing towards the back of the field under Rene Piechulek, she began to make headway approaching the two furlong marker and ran on strongly to lead close home, denying the Group 1 winning favourite Torquator Tasso by a neck on the line.
Speaking after the race, the elated winning jockey said, “I’m speechless. The filly has a huge heart, I knew that she could fight and that was amazing.”
Bred by Anahita Stables, Sunny Queen is a half-sister to Listed winner Suestado and becomes a seventh Group 1 winner overall by Camelot.
