Smart Camelot Colt Emerges At Sandown

Defiance (2c Camelot - Alouja, by Raven’s Pass) joined an honour roll that includes the likes of Westover and Too Darn Hot when winning Thursday’s mile maiden at Sandown.

Roger Varian’s newcomer was settled towards the back of the field by David Egan and had plenty of ground to make up when pushed along approaching the two furlong marker. Running on strongly after switching right, the bay kept on well to lead by a short head on the line, with another neck back to promising newcomer Deira Mile (Camelot) in third.

A step up in class may now be on the cards for Defiance, with the last two winners of the race having won or placed at the highest level. The promising colt is owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, having been bought by Highclere Agency as a yearling for 190,000gns. The son of Camelot was bred by Seven Hills Bloodstock and Torres Strait Bloodstock.
