Alder Another Derby Contender For Australia

Australia’s Classic hopes enjoyed another boost on Friday when talented juvenile Alder (3c Australia - Eccentricity, by Kingmambo) made a winning return to action at Cork.

Donnacha O’Brien’s charge was last seen finishing third to Auguste Rodin in the Group 2 Champion Juvenile Stakes, and enjoyed a boost in form when the winner subsequently impressed in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy. Stepping up to ten furlongs on return, he raced in touch under Gavin Ryan and was asked to quicken passing the three furlong pole. Switched left to challenge approaching the final furlong, he ran on well to lead inside the final furlong and stayed on to score by a comfortable length and a half.

“We always thought he was a smart horse,” O’Brien said after the race. “He had good form behind Auguste Rodin last year and has done very well over the winter. It was nice to get him started and he has a big engine.”

Looking ahead, the trainer continued, “He is one to look forward to and whether he knows enough for Epsom, I don't know but we'll have a think about it. We'll have a look at a Trial and then on to a Derby.”

Bred by Whisperview Trading, Alder is owned by Coolmore partners with Mrs O’Brien. He becomes his sire’s third Classic contender to win this week, with Canberra Legend (Australia) having remained unbeaten in the Listed Feilden Stakes, while Waipiro (Australia) will be aimed at a Derby Trial after impressing on debut at Newmarket.
