Australia Colt Looks A Class Apart At Newmarket
The progressive Convict (2c Australia - Tweed, by Sakhee) strode home a convincing winner of Wednesday’s £40,000 two-year-old contest at Newmarket.
Having gained his maiden win last month, he was narrowly beaten over a mile last time out and stepped up to ten furlongs for the first time on Wednesday. Tom Marquand held up the chesnut, waiting until after the three furlong pole to make his move and chased down the leader approaching the final furlong. Asserting soon after, he raced clear to score by four lengths, the field strung out behind him.
Trainer William Haggas afterwards said that Convict was likely to be finished for the season. Owned by B Haggas and bred by JB Haggas, the son of Australia is a half-brother to useful stayer Hamish, out of a talented half-sister to Group 1 scorer Beaten Up.
