Back To Back Group Wins For Son Of Australia

Point Lonsdale (4c Australia - Sweepstake, by Acclamation) made it two from two this season when justifying favouritism in the Group 2 Huxley Stakes at Chester on Friday.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt was a top-class two-year-old, winning the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and another two Group races, before suffering his sole juvenile defeat when finishing second in the Group 1 National Stakes. Seen just once as a three-year-old, the son of Australia made a winning return to action last month in the Group 3 Alleged Stakes and was reunited with Ryan Moore in Friday’s feature. Racing over ten furlongs, he was ridden to lead approaching the final furlong and kept on well to deny a late challenge by a neck.

Speaking after the race, Ryan Moore said, “Point Lonsdale was obviously a very good two-year-old and he didn't get much of a go at three, but he's come back and won a Group 3 and then a Group 2. I think today's race was well up to standard - they are smart horses and I don't think he was suited by the track so I was very happy with him.”

Point Lonsdale is owned by Coolmore partners and Westerberg, having been bought by MV Magnier as a yearling for 575,000gns. The son of Australia was bred by Epona Bloodstock and is a full-brother to Group 1 winning globetrotter Broome (Australia).
