Brilliant (Gleneagles) wins her maiden at Leopardstown

Debutante Date For Well Bred Gleneagles Filly

A step up in class is next on the cards for Brilliant (2f Gleneagles – Plying, by Hard Spun) after justifying favoritism in Thursday's opening maiden at Leopardstown.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly finished third in a similar contest two weeks prior and was partnered by Ryan Moore for the first time on Thursday. Tracking the leader for much of the way, she led after the two furlong pole and was ridden when challenged approaching the final furlong. Keeping on well, she prevailed by a neck on the line, while newcomer National Lady (Magna Grecia) caught the eye inn third.

“Ryan was delighted with her and said to ride her more patiently the next day,” O’Brien said after the race. “He said she's very genuine and she wanted to win, which is a big help. She will be better next day.”

O’Brien nominated the Debutante Stakes as Brilliant’s next target. Owned by Coolmore partners with Westerberg, she was bought by MV Magnier from breeder Jossestown Farm as a yearling for 650,000gns. The promising daughter of Gleneagles is a half-sister to the top-class Alcohol Free (No Nay Never) and Listed winner Alexander James (Camelot).
