Exciting Son Of Australia Enters Derby Picture
Anzac Day (2c Australia - Merville, by Montjeu) entered the Epsom Derby market after drawing clear to an impressive maiden win at Newmarket on Wednesday.
The Andrew Balding-trained colt made promising late headway at Goodwood earlier this month and stepped up to ten furlongs on his second start. Racing prominently under James Doyle, he eased into the lead after the three furlong pole and was ridden approaching the final furlong. Soon in command, he was pushed out to win by five lengths.
The impressive winner is owned by Brook Farm Bloodstock and co-owner Sue Johnson was on hand to say, “We are dreaming of the Derby next year but we need to talk to Andrew first. We are the dreamers and he is the realist, but you buy into racing for the dream.”
Bookmakers introduced Anzac Day to the Derby market at 25/1. The son of Australia was sold by breeder Kildaragh Stud as a yearling for 200,000gns.
