Freds Mate (Gleneagles) Gets Off The Mark At Newcastle

Gleneagles Colt Battles Back For Maiden Victory

Freds Mate (2c Gleneagles - Flamingo Sea, by Woodman) displayed a likeable attitude when getting off the mark at Newcastle on Monday.

Charlie Johnston’s charge dropped back to a mile on his second start and pressed the leader for much of the way under Jason Hart. Leading with over two furlongs left to race, he was ridden soon after, before being headed by the favourite approaching the final furlong. Rallying gamely inside the final furlong, he regained the advantage 110 yards out and led by a neck on the line.

The runner-up being a previous winner added to the promising nature of Freds Mate’s win. Owned by the Burke Family, the son of Gleneagles is closely related to Stakes performer Sir Walter Scott (Galileo).
