Gleneagles Newcomer Impresses At Leopardstown
Joseph O’Brien appears to have another exciting prospect on his hands, after Maritime Wings (2c Gleneagles - Celeste De La Mer, by Zoffany) came from last to first to win Thursday’s seven furlong maiden at Leopardstown.
Dylan Browne McMonagle gave the newcomer a patient ride, asking his mount to quicken approaching the turn for home and the chesnut readily obliged. Leading entering the final furlong, he ran on well to beat the favourite by half a length, with another three and a half lengths back to the third horse.
Speaking after the race, assistant trainer Brendan Powell said, “He showed a nice turn of foot there and has won With his ears pricked. He'll step up in grade now.”
Owned by the Thoroughbred Racing Syndicate, Maritime Wings was bred by Jer Hickey and Aaron Langan. The €82,000 foal purchase continues a fantastic season so far for his sire Gleneagles, who was responsible for three individual Group winners last month alone.
