Mill Stream Adds Group 1 Sprint To Gleneagles’ Bow
Mill Stream (4c Gleneagles – Swirral Edge, by Hellvelyn) continued Gleneagles' outstanding season when capturing Saturday’s Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket for Jane Chapple-Hyam and Peter Harris.
The progressive colt won a pair of Stakes races in France last season and proved better than ever on his second start of the year when pouncing late in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes. Third in the Group 1 Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, he reopposed a number of those rivals on Saturday, when ridden in touch with the leaders by William Buick.
Making headway approaching the final furlong, he was ridden to challenge soon after and ran on to lead inside the final 110 yards. He kept on well to deny Swingalong by a neck, with another length and three quarters back to dual Group 1 winner Vandeek in third.
Speaking after the race, a delighted Chapple-Hyam said, “We knew that there was going to be a lot of pace on and at halfway, when they were doing ten and change per furlong, we were in business.
“Thanks go to owner Peter Harris. I'm a very lucky lady to have him as an owner and he knows the game. I'm highly delighted to have trained him a Group 1 winner and it's what he and the yard both needed.”
The Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest is next on the agenda for the four-year-old, who was bought by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock as a yearling for 350,000gns. The Redpender Stud-bred bay is a perfect advertisement for the versatility of his sire, who was responsible for Group 1 Deutsches Derby victor Palladium (Gleneagles) six days prior.
Gleneagles’ other top-flight winners are Grade 1 Man O’War Stakes scorer Highland Chief and Group 1 Prix de Royallieu heroine Loving Dream. His fantastic season is far from over, with Group 1 success the aim for Epsom Derby runner-up Ambiente Friendly and impressive Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes winner Calandagan.
