It was a two-stakes winner weekend for Golden Pal on Sunday when Gr.3 Zuma Beach favorite Repo Man (2c Golden Pal x Gran Nighthawk, by Awesome Again) led home a Coolmore-sired trifecta. A winner on debut at Del Mar, Repo Man stepped up from five furlongs to a mile in this race and showed the distance wasn’t a worry. He was the back marker in the tightly packed field and let Justify’s Maxify and Jack Christopher’s Duty Bound make the first challenges toward the longtime leader. That horse folded in the stretch and let the other two take command at the same time Umberto Rispoli angled Repo Man to the outside. Duty Bound gave up his challenge for the lead, but Maxify refused to give in and Repo Man set down to battle that one all the way to the line. Neither colt was willing to give in, but Repo Man gained the advantage late to win by a head with Duty Bound rounding out the top three. The Granpollo Stable-bred Repo Man is out of the Awesome Again mare Gran Nighthawk, who has produced three winners from four to race. Placed in her own racing career, she is a sibling to eight winners with the group including her Grade 2 winning full sister Awesome Baby and the dam of the stakes winning Coco Connect. Golden Pal’s third stakes winner ties him for the first-crop lead in that category with Corniche with the stallion already leading the table with 25 winners and eight stakes performers.
