It was another 2-year-old stakes winner for Justify on Sunday when Jas (2c Justify x Flag Day, by Giant’s Causeway) switched to dirt for a Gr.3 Street Sense victory. Stakes placed last out on turf, Steve Asmussen’s decision to enter him in this 1 1/16-mile dirt race paid off. The colt tracked the leading Card Man early before challenging him for the lead down the backstretch. It was a three-horse fight for the lead around the turn with Jas finally getting an advantage in the stretch but having to battle a closing runner at that stage. Determined to the very end, Jas held the late challenger off by a neck at the line with the rest of the field over five lengths behind. The Earle Mack-bred Jas races for Red Lane Thoroughbreds and broke his maiden on the turf at Kentucky Downs before finishing second in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile S. by just half a length. This victory earned him 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby to give his connections their first chance to dream of roses in May next year. Jas is a half-brother to the Grade 3 winner and Grade 2-placed Hall of Fame as one of three winners from four to race out of Flag Day. That mare is a half-sister to two stakes performers out of the stakes-placed Sense to Compete. Sense to Compete is one of four stakes producers out of her dam Compete alongside the dams of dual Grade 1 winner Diversify and two other stakes winners. This was the second juvenile stakes winner of the weekend for Justify alongside Just for Pipa, who won yesterday’s Bowman Mill S. at Keeneland.
