Justify’s Mizumi (3f Justify x Sweet Opportunity, by Distorted Humor) stayed undefeated on Friday night when she shipped from her California base to Prairie Meadows to win the Iowa Oaks. Coming off a win in the Gr.3 Summertime Oaks in this 1 1/16 mile dirt start, it wasn’t surprising to see her go off as a heavy favorite under Florent Geroux. Comfortable with wherever her rider wanted to place her, she broke well then settled comfortably behind the leader while saving ground. Slipping back to last down the backstretch, she was forced to hustle coming into the final three furlongs to make up the ground she had lost, but it wasn’t a large problem. The leader gave in with just over a sixteenth left to run and Mizumi pulled away for a 1 ¼ length victory with the third placed runner over seven lengths behind. A Baoma Corp homebred, Mizumi broke her maiden on debut4 in May and hasn’t looked back with wins in all three of her starts. The filly is the first stakes winner and one of four winners from four to race out of the multiple stakes placed Sweet Opportunity. Sweet Opportunity is keeping the stakes producing tradition alive with her granddam Gold Canyon doing the same thing. Gold Canyon is the dam of Grade 2 winner Adriano and Grade 3 placed Gold d’Oro. Her daughters have went on to produce horses such as Grade 2 winner Five G, Grade 3 winner Strike Power, and stakes winner Lipstick City among others. This is the second stakes winner of the month for Justify, whose daughter To The Flame won the Wild Applause S. last weekend.
