It’s a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Win and You’re In winner for Justify after Haffner (2c Justify x Earth Strike, by Zoffany) won the Gr.3 Acomb S. at York by two lengths. Second in a Group 2 last out, he returned to the same seven furlong distance in search of his first stakes victory here. Ryan Moore slotted him in behind the leaders after angling closer to the rail from his outside gate and the colt was content to hang out there until given the cue to run. That cue came with just over a quarter mile to go and Haffner grabbed the lead soon after. No one was a match for the colt, who raced home strongly and take his record to two wins and two seconds in four starts. “He's a very good mover and we always thought the quicker the better for him with the ground,” said trainer Aidan O’Brien. He handled that today, on the softer side of good, no problem and with every week that goes by he'll improve. He's a typical Justify and they very rarely relent when they get to the front. He was a little bit slowly away, but when Ryan asked him he got there a little bit quicker than he wanted. He could go to Doncaster for the [G1] Futurity Trophy and next year he'd have no problem with a mile-and-a-quarter. We have the trials in Ireland and the National Stakes and all those races, but he's right in the mix and always was,” O’Brien said. Bred by D J Stables and the Justify Syndicate, Haffner is out of Zoffany mare Earth Strike. A winner in Ireland, Earth Strike moved to the U.S. later in her career to finish third in the Allen Black Cat LaCombe Memorial S. and is the dam of two winners from two to race. Haffner is just the latest stakes winner in his family with his dam a half-sister multiple Group 1 winner Order of St George and Grade 3 winners Angel Terrace and Asperity in addition to the stakes winning Sehoy. The colt’s third dam is champion Storm Song, who produced two stakes performers herself with her descendants also including champions Better Life and The Last Romance. Justify leads all North American stallions by juvenile stakes performers with five. This is also his second stakes winner of the week after Justifiable Steel won the Princess of Sylmar S. on Monday with Unwritten Rule finishing third in the P THA President's Sprint S. the next day.
