It was a third career Breeders’ Cup winner for Justify on Friday when Haffner (Justify x Earth Strike, by Zoffany) scored his first Grade 1 win with a victory in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Coming into the one-mile turf race after a win in the Gr.2 Royal Lodge S., Haffner angled to an inside path quickly out of the gate to race around the first turn on the rail in third right behind No Nay Never’s leading Avec Toi. Ryan Moore kept him in that spot until angling to the outside of the leader coming around the bend for a clear run at the lead. Haffner quickly confronted Avec Toi as the field raced into the stretch with that one giving in as the field raced through the final furlong. Once Haffner took the lead, he pulled away to win by 1 3/4 lengths with Avec Toi just missing second by a nose and the rest of the field 4 ¼ lengths behind him. “It was very straightforward,” said jockey Ryan Moore. “He put himself in the right spot and he found a good rhythm. He just was relentless off the bend. Every time I asked him, he kept finding more.” [embed]https://www.twitter.com/coolmoreamerica/status/2116298938588508359?a=JaZydsU40Yikm-tmcqo&s=20[/embed] The Aidan O’Brien-trained Haffner races for Peter Brant, Westerberg, Brook Smith, and the Coolmore partners. The Breeders’ Cup victory was his fourth win in seven starts with his other wins including two stakes. The colt was also second in the Gr.2 Vintage S. in July. O’Brien is already looking to the future with the promising son of Justify, who has his eye on becoming another classic winner for his sire. “I think he’ll be a classic horse next year,” O’Brien said. “He’ll have no problem going 10 furlongs and would probably go even farther. He’s very classy, really.” Bred by D.J. Stables with the Justify Syndicate, Haffner is one of two winners out of the stakes placed Zoffany mare Earth Strike. Earth Strike is a half-sister to champion Order of St George, Grade 3 winners Angel Terrace and Asperity, and stakes winner Sehoy among the six stakes performers out of Another Storm. The stakes form continues throughout Haffner’s family with his granddam one of six winners for the champion Storm Song, whose descendants also include champions Better Life and The Last Romance. Earth Strike had a filly by Justify this year. This is the 13th worldwide Grade 1 winner for Justify with the stallion having five in 2026 alone. Justify has two Grade 1 winning juveniles in 2026 with his daughter Voyager winning the Gr.1 Natalma this fall and leads all North American stallions in nearly every juvenile category.
