It was a Keeneland Maiden Special Weight exacta for Golden Pal on Friday when More Champagne (2f Golden Pal x Wildcat Gaze, by Wildcat Heir) and Shining Moment (2f Golden Pal x Blind Copy, by Distorted Humor) finished far ahead of the rest of the field. Both were making their debuts in the 5 ½ furlong turf race over the same track and distance their sire won the Gr.2 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on, his first of two Breeders’ Cup victories in his career. Shining Moment went straight to the lead as the race favorite while More Champagne took a more conservative trip staying on the rail. She raced a few lengths behind the top two as they pushed each other through the early fractions and the rest of the field started to drop back. In the turn, More Champagne started catching up to the leader and she’d collared her by the top of the stretch. Shining Moment tried to fight back, but she didn’t have enough to hold the winner off and More Champagne pulled away to win by 6 ½ lengths with Shining Moment 10 ¾ lengths ahead of the third placed runner. A Florida-bred like her sire, she is the second winner from three to race out of five-time winning Wildcat Gaze. That mare is a half-sister to the stakes winning duo of Saratoga Treasure and April Gaze and to the stakes placed duo of Veteran Beach and Disco Star among her six winning siblings from seven runners. Their dam Sky Gazer is a half-sister to the stakes winning Becky’s Exchange and the stakes placed duo of Cape Cod Carol and Believeinmenow. Golden Pal’s two winners leads all freshman sires this year. He is also set to have his first stakes runner when his first winner, Skara Brae, runs in the Kentucky Juvenile S. on Wednesday.
