Justify’s runners gave him a stakes treble on Saturday with Mizumi (3f Justify x Sweet Opportunity, by Distorted Humor) rounding out the day with an easy victory in the Gr.3 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita. Making her stakes debut in the 1 1/16 mile race, Mizumi was happy to capitalize on her rail position out of the gate and settled close behind the leader. She stayed in that position throughout the backstretch run but when the time came to run in the turn she seemed that she may be in trouble. She was forced to wait until she could find a hole but once she found one, she made a serious challenge. The leader didn’t have much left to hold her off and Mizumi quickly raced past to win by 3 3/4 lengths and put herself in the conversation of 3-year-old fillies to watch in California the rest of the year. Trained by Bob Baffert as a homebred for Boama Corp, the filly is now undefeated in her two starts. She is the first stakes winner out of the multiple stakes placed Sweet Opportunity, who has been a successful broodmare with four winners from four to race. The mare is a granddaughter of Gold Canyon, who is a stakes producer in her own right. That mare produced Gr.2 winner Adriano and Gr.3 placed Gold d’Oro with her daughters the dams of horses such as Gr.2 winner Five G, Gr.3 winner Strike Power, and stakes winner Lipstick City. Justify’s stakes winners came on both the dirt and turf today from seven furlongs to 1 ½ miles.
