It was a second consecutive stakes victory for Doncho (5g Mo Town x Sassy Redhead, by Henny Hughes) on Friday with a victory in the William Garrett H. at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Winning a Churchill Downs stakes last out, the Michelle Lovell trainee went off at even money as the heavy race favorite in the five-furlong turf race. He added a challenge for himself at the break when he stumbled badly and nearly unseated Jaime Torres but quickly righted himself and took command. From there, there wasn’t much of a challenge for Doncho. Handled confidently by Torres with Mondogetsbuckets keeping him honest, Doncho found another gear in the stretch to pull off and win by two lengths. It was the seventh win in 13 career starts for Doncho, who races for JAL Racing and has made $541,081 in his career. The gelding’s victories include four stakes at four different tracks overall. Bred by Susan Young, he’s one of two stakes horses out of Sassy Redhead. In all, that mare has produced four winners from her seven to race with each winning at least two races. Sassy Redhead is a granddaughter of the stakes winning Sassy Pants, whose runners include Grade 1 winner and producer Madcap Escapade. The mare produced Mi Sueno, who went on to produce three stakes winners of her own. This family also includes U.S. champion Immersive and Peruvian champion Khamal among others. Mo Town’s 86 winners in 2026 leads all fifth crop sires with three stakes winners and six stakes performers to his name this year.
