Another one of his runners went off as the favorite in a Belmont Special Weight on Sunday but in the end, it was Corniche’s daughter Zomoroda (2f Corniche x Over Emphasize, by Overanalyze) who visited the winner’s circle. Making her debut in the six-furlong synthetic race, the Brad Cox-trained Zomoroda broke well to put herself in the running near the lead early. She dropped a few lengths back off the front runners down the backstretch but found herself third coming into the turn and put in a huge run in the stretch. There was no greenness in sight as Zomoroda battled another runner for the length of the stretch before grabbing the advantage near the line. The filly kicked off her career as a one length winner for FMQ Stables. Zomoroda was a $335,000 juvenile purchase from Grassroots Training and Sales by her racing owner after selling for $85,000 as a yearling. Bred by Doug Branham, Zomoroda is the first foal out of the Grade 2-placed Over Emphasize. That mare is a half-sister to Scat Daddy’s stakes winning Allanah, who also produced the Grade 2 winning J B Strikes Back and Grade 3 winner Reincarnate. This family also includes the Peruvian champion Zeide Isaac among others. This is the second winner of the weekend for Corniche, who saw another spending juvenile win at Keeneland on Saturday in his $550,000 daughter Tannhauser.
