Back in Australia this spring, St Mark’s Basilica added a new stakes-winner to his tally in France overnight where progressive colt Pathein (3c St Mark's Basilica x Excellent View, by Shamardal) won the Listed Prix le Fabuleux (1800m) at Chantilly. Trained by Ed Dunlop, Pathein has been racing well in strong handicap races in the UK and made the jump to stakes class with Mickael Barzalona in the saddle. He chimed in with a strong finish and forged clear to win by three-quarters of a length taking his overall record to two wins and two placings from seven starts. Purchased for 150,000 guineas by Highflyer / Ed Dunlop from the Daylesford Stud draft Tattersalls October Book 2 Yearling Sale, Pathein is a half-brother to stakes-winner Mutaraffa. He is the second stakes-winner from three foals to race from Excellent View, a placed Shamardal daughter of stakes-winner Pearl Grey. Pathein is the eighth stakes-winner for St Mark’s Basilica, who has had a good start to spring in Australia with six winners headed by his runaway Group II winning filly Saintly Dancer. St Mark’s Basilica is priced at $38,500.
