A new stakes-winner for Golden Slipper winning sire Pierro, Coolmore bred and raised The Jester’s Son (6g Pierro x Jalsah, by Elusive Quality) landed the $125,000 Listed Boulder Cup (2125m) at Kalgoorlie on Sunday. The six year-old gelding started life in the care of the Hayes brothers at Lindsay Park after being purchased as a yearling for $180,000 from the Coolmore draft at Inglis Easter. He won or placed at his first seven starts and when his form appeared to plateau, the decision was taken to offer him on Inglis Digital in February last year. The Jester’s Son was snapped up for $22,500 to join the Esperance stable of Helen Harding in WA and has not looked back. He has made steady progress through his grades with an increase in distance along the way and relished his longest trip to date when scoring a three-quarter length win over hot favourite Opportunistic in the Boulder Cup for his regular rider Zephen Johnston-Porter. It was a first stakes win for both jockey and trainer. “It’s amazing, we always knew he was a really good horse,” said Zephen Johnston-Porter. “It’s a first Listed race for us and Helen has been a great supporter of mine for a long time, I can’t even remember when we started. It means a lot. “First time over the distance for the horse, so there was a bit of nervousness about whether he could run it, but he just does everything so well. He teaches me!” The Jester’s Son now has the overall record of eight wins and 12 placings from 29 starts with prizemoney topping $320,000. Bred at Coolmore, he is the best of five winners from seven foals to race from Jalsah, a Group III placed half-sister by Elusive Quality to Group II winning sprinter Faatinah. The Jester’s Son is the 42nd strakes-winner for Pierro, who stands for just $22,000 this spring.
