Coolmore
Causeway (3c Wootton Bassett - Heaven Of Heavens, by Galileo) continued his progress up the ranks with a game win in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot on Friday. The Coolmore homebred has now won his last five starts, his sole defeat coming on debut at Gowran Park last September when fourth to subsequent Epsom Derby hero Christmas Day (by Camelot). Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the colt has won at black-type level on his last three outings, following up scores in the Listed Coolmore Stud Henry Longfellow Irish EBF Tetrarch Stakes and Group 3 Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh. Ridden by Ryan Moore, Causeway settled behind the leaders and crept into contention from three furlongs out. The colt pressed the leader a furlong out and took up the lead inside the final furlong to win by a neck. O’Brien said: “We always felt he was going to do enough, we’re delighted, delighted for everybody including those who are not here. “I think we’ll step him in trip, we’ll have to see what Ryan says, but I wouldn’t be too surprised [if we did]. He has so much class. “We stepped him up from a mile, to a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half. He’s very lazy, it’s hard to know what’s in there. Ryan said that he was toying with him and when he gets there he’s lazy.”
