Drumbeat (2c Wootton Bassett - Cloth Of Cloud, by Captain Al) continued his progress with a first stakes win in the Group 3 Zetland Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. The Ballydoyle-trained colt gained his first win at the third attempt at Gowran Park last month and finished a fine third in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes last time out to stablemate Noble Exhibit. Ridden by Ryan Moore, Drumbeat was towards the back of the field, but remained in touch before making headway three furlongs out. The son of Wootton Bassett disputed the lead from the two-furlong marker and went clear inside the final furlong to strike by five and a half lengths. Aidan O'Brien said: “He’s a really classy horse who could be a very classy middle-distance horse next year. “He travelled very easily through the race and the time was fast. I always thought this [ten-furlong] trip would suit and the horse who beat him the last day [Noble Exhibit] is a fair horse, I would say – he worked very well this morning and is going to the Futurity [Trophy, at Doncaster]. “He [Drumbeat] was very comfortable going up in trip and he's a nice colt I would say. We'll look at a Derby trial in the spring, but we'll consider the Criterium de Saint-Cloud – we usually do, it's hard not to!" Drumbeat was bred by Barronstown Stud.
