Benvenuto Cellini (3c Frankel - Newspaperofrecord, by Lope De Vega) produced a brilliant performance to capture the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Saturday. In victory, the Ballydoyle-trained colt ensured Aidan O’Brien became the winning-most trainer in Breeders’ Cup history with 24 successes. Benvenuto Cellini had landed the Irish Derby earlier in the campaign and was returning to his very best with a three-quarter-length win in a top-class field. Ridden by Ryan Moore, Coolmore and White Birch Farm’s homebred son of Frankel settled in mid division and was waiting for room as the field turned for home. Moore waited for the gaps to open and Benvenuto Cellini responded to his rider’s asking to show a potent turn of foot and win in fine style. In third was Diamond Necklace (by St Mark’s Basilica). O’Brien, who was equalling his own record of 28 top-level victories in a calendar year, said: “He's a horse who showed a lot of class. Ryan was calm and relaxed on him and let it happen. He was brilliant on him. He did it again, he had to come out and come round. “Time after time he produces on the day. He accepted early and let them go, but he had one bullet to fire which he executed perfectly. It's so special that everyone is here. It's a special day.” Co-owner Peter Brant added: “Aidan's been telling me this is a Breeders' Cup horse for quite a long time. The mare [Newspaperofrecord] was a Breeders' Cup winner at a mile and we've been fortunate to keep breeding from her. I couldn't believe at the sixteenth pole where he had no chance, but all of a sudden there was this big burst of speed and ‘boom'.”
